The decision to leave out Tom Bombadil (if I may answer your question) was a matter of length, according to Peter Jackson. They only had time for mostly essenstial events. Otherwise the movie would have been, like, five hours long.:)

I agree. And, I am sure Bombadil will an interesting part of our discussion at the Green Dragon tomorrow too, so I don't want to spend my whole wad now. I am a Bombadil fan, but his existance and importance even in the books is more controversial than you may think.
