Well, the theory - that if you could "fold" space you could get from one place to another quickly - is used several places. Not always called a tesseract, basically. I don't know if it really is even possible.

Basically the same concept in Dune, I think?

No, that was straightforward hyperspace, IIRC.

Hmm...well, I was under the impression that it was called space folding, but it's been many years since I've read the books, and a long time since I even saw the movie, so I did some searching and found this.

Apparently quite a debate about it! ;-)

To me, the "tesseract" thing is closer to the stargate idea than to hyperspace. Heinlein's Tunnel in the Sky has a similar idea, so does that Stargate movie. Hyperspace usually requires a ship to get a certain distance from the star, and then shift to another sort of space/dimension/whatever. Tesseracts can be done on Earth (or any other planet).

Okay Jen, you seem to be the expert.

Here's my summer reading list, so far:

The Two Towers (again)
The Chronicles of Narnia (again)
Books 8&9 in "The Left Behind" series (I know, but easy reads and I just want to see what they do with them)

I'll probably pick up some theology works and a biography or two. But, if you were to add to my science fiction list for this summer, what would you add?

(others may play too, but I'd like Jen's list)

Well, first I'd approve of the Narnia and say "Agh! Left Behind! Noooo - read something that is actually worthwhile!" But that's just me...

Um, I'd say, try a smattering of different authors. Pick up Heinlein's Double Star or Starship Troopers. Connie Willis - Doomsday Book (depressing but really good) or To Say Nothing of the Dog. Or both. Dune, if you haven't read it. Asimov's Foundation series, but not Foundation's Edge or Foundation and Earth, IMO. Any of Arthur Clarke's short stories. Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. Code of the Lifemaker, James Hogan.

I could go on...

Thanks, but summer is only three months. That's a good list to work from.

And, like I said about "The Left Behind" series. I know, I know. But it's kinda like my trashy beach novel substitute...
