I guess I felt a bit of empathy for the cave troll, so it worked for me. His reactions to pain were so animated... We could see when he had been hurt... and the idea that he was a chained "bad dog" of the orcs was not lost on me. His aggression was random... he took out several orcs in the battle.
Contrast that with Lurtz... who I could have felt compassion for when Saruman was whispering and poisoning his mind... Lurtz had this kind of animal (almost sexual) quality about him.... but in the end, a brutishness that made me cheer his death without remorse at all... Why do you suppose that is? - Isn't he is just as "innocent"? -just as much a brutish but brainwashed pawn in someone else's war?
Or am I just in my cups?

I'm not worried... I expect MS to collapse under it's own weight, a bloated, tired dinosaur of a company, irrelevant and ignored, in about 10 years or so. Much like IBM did about 10-15 years ago.IBM died because a lot of cheaper imitations that worked just as well flooded the market and outsold them. That will be harder to do if MS keeps buying and killing anything good enough to look like competition.
And as long as their product stays as good, and as innovative as it is, the complaints will only be muttered among the fringe elements. MS may be taking us, hook line and sinker, but we are snapping it up everything he creates with eagerness. I am happy as long as the stuff is great, and the fact that everyone else I communicate with is using it makes my life better, not worse. No harm. no foul.

IBM died Boy, I am really out of things, when did this happen?
We are really starting to attract a crowd. It doesn't look like coffee and rolls will do in the morning anymore. Perhaps you early risers will have to set out a breakfast buffet, sort of like Shoney's.
To: Lucius Cornelius Sulla
Shoney's? - must be local... I will do my best, but I would never cut it with the Guild. There are better wimmen than me on the thread!
To: Lucius Cornelius Sulla
Oh - IBM is still around, but you know what we mean... they are not the staple in hardware that they once were.

IBM died because a lot of cheaper imitations that worked just as well flooded the market and outsold them. I wish I had time now to talk about how that happened, and how I think MS is making many of the same mistakes now that IBM made then, but I have to go pick up my Rose from work.
I suppose the last thing FR needs is another pro/anti MS discussion... maybe when I get home I'll just have a nice meal and relax instead. ;)

Good idea! - No more Microsoft!
To: HairOfTheDog
So Microsoft defenders and Boromir-bashers are one in the same? - hmmm... So we see that we can't just take something that doesn't belong to us because it is precious? ???? Non sequitur...Norman coordinate.
To: Lucius Cornelius Sulla
Perhaps you early risers will have to set out a breakfast buffet, sort of like Shoney's. I did that (or tried to) last Saturday. If we're going to put out a spread on weekdays I think we should rotate!
To: Overtaxed
hehehehe - Tell Norman not to worry about the sequitor... I don't know what it means either.
To: HairOfTheDog
Oooh....only 30...er...29 posts to go!
To: HairOfTheDog
Shoney's? - must be local... I think that it is a national chain but that it uses different names. It is called 'Bob's' in some places. It sells 'Big Boy' hamburgers, and has a breakfast and lunch/dinner buffet everywhere it exists. I have never been to the Pacific northwest, so I don't know restaurants there.
To: Lucius Cornelius Sulla
OK - We have had Bob's Big Boy's around... but they were drive ins... Nevertheless... I recommend Overtaxed and 2Jedismom for laying out the goodies in the morning... I am three hours behind so I would not be of much use for makin' breakfast ;~D
To: HairOfTheDog;Bear_in_RoseBear
OK by me! We can let Bear_in_RoseBear make the coffee, that way we know he won't keep it for himself.
To: Lucius Cornelius Sulla
Well, I think I am going to lay down for a bit... I seem to have acquired a headache... see you all later on when I recover!
To: HairOfTheDog
I seem to have acquired a headache... Well it has been a long week, and you got to sleep late last night. Get some rest, and I'll see you later, or this weekend.
To: HairOfTheDog
Shoney's? - must be local... Think "Bob's Big Boy"...
To: Lucius Cornelius Sulla: HairoftheDog
Who'll bring the pints?
To: HairOfTheDog
I seem to have acquired a headache... Too many pints? Or not enough?
Rest easy young friend. I'll guard the precious.
To: Lucius Cornelius Sulla; HairoftheDog; whoever
Hello friends! I am tired but fairly happy. Installed a magic air-link NIC card, so I can check my posts and emails anywhere in the house now. And I rented Terminator for later tonight, and I've got an idea for a story. Now I see Microsoft bashers and I think I'll let them slide - but if pro-Palestinian, anti-Christian, Bush-bashing pot-smoking Orcs come in, they're going down.
