During the time of the Civil War, Ashley was a man's name. It was a strong family name.Oh, I know...it's just that in the movie he was a sissy, in my opinion. Sounds like you agree.

Scarlett was a complete brat that basically wanted Ashley because he was not "conquered" by her. I'm sure you know a lot of women like that - they want a guy simply because he belongs to somebody else and it makes them feel good to know that they can have "any guy they want". See, I get the exact opposite. Scarlett loved Ashley, and Ashley led Scarlett on. He made it seem that he only married Melanie because he was forced to, but it was Scarlett that he loved.
Ashley is a contradiction in terms. He loved Melanie because she represented the genteel side of the life he lived. He loved Scarlett because she was "alive". Those are his words. Scarlett scared him and fascinated him because her emotions were not trapped behind social mores of the day. After his world collapsed, he clung to Melanie, but he always let it slip that Scarlett was the one he wanted.
That's why Rhett Butler hated him so. Because Rhett understood what Ashley was doing to Scarlett. It strengthened his hold on Scarlett making her desire him more, because in Scarlett's immature values it was honor that kept Ashley with Melanie and not love. If she could convince Ashley to break with society, then she could have him.

Translation: I spent a lot of time wanting to whack her with a sock full of sand... why Rosie, I had no idea I was rubbin' off on you... brings a tear to my eye...

I do... Read the book. Again, I think you will like it. Ashley is an honorable man caught in a world not of his choosing.

No, after he died, his widder got veterans pay from the government. She had to swear to the Ironclad Oath during the Civil War to keep the payments.
To: g'nad
hey, what's not to like about g'nad?... g'nad's likeable, but he doesn't always understand.
Cave trolls don't like LOTR
g'nad doesn't like GWTW...
We don't like cave trolls, but we like g'nad...

She had to swear to the Ironclad Oath during the Civil War to keep the payments. What state was she in then?...
To: carton253
In my family, I have ancestors that fought in the Revolution... Fairly certain I did too, still doing the research, but my earliest ancestors here (that we know of) were French Huguenots and settled near where I live now in the late 1600s...

We don't like cave trolls, but we like g'nad... uughhh...good answer... here...
To: Corin Stormhands
French Huguenots frogs, eh?...

If the Virginians thought more about winning the war than they did about protecting Virginia, we'd still have a republic. Ma'am you do a disservice to the graves of the glorious dead...
To: g'nad
Kentucky...
To: carton253
That's understandable...bein' a border state and all...
To: g'nad
Yes, but they were Huguenots and they were forced out of France by the nasty ones...
