The New Hobbit Hole

Welcome to The New Hobbit Hole

Concerning Hobbits

The New Hobbit Chronicles

This is a continuation of the infamous thread New Zealander Builds Hobbit Hole originally posted on January 26, 2001 by John Farson, who at the time undoubtedly thought he had found a rather obscure article that would elicit a few replies and die out. Without knowing it, he became the founder of the Hobbit Hole. For reasons incomprehensible to some, the thread grew to over 4100 replies. It became the place for hobbits and friends of hobbits to chit chat and share LoTR news and views, hang out, and talk amongst ourselves in the comfort of familiar surroundings.

In keeping with the new posting guidelines, the thread idea is continuing here, as will the Green Dragon Inn, our more structured spin-off thread, as soon as we figure out how to move all the good discussion that has been had there. As for the Hobbit Hole, we will just start fresh, bringing only a few mathoms such as the picture above with us to make it feel like home, and perhaps a walk down memory lane:

Our discussion has been light:

It very well may be that a thread named "New Zealander builds Hobbit hole" will end up being the longest Tolkien thread of them all, with some of the best heartfelt content... Sorry John, but I would have rather it had been one with a more distinguished title!… post 252 - HairOfTheDog

However, I can still celebrate, with quiet dignity, the fact that what started as a laugh about some wacko in New Zealand has mutated and grown into a multifaceted discussion of the art, literature, and philosophy that is Tolkien. And now that I've managed to write the most pompous sentence of my entire life, I agree, Rosie… post 506 - JenB

Hah! I was number 1000!! (Elvish victory dance... wait, no; that would be too flitty) … post 1001 - BibChr

Real men don't have to be afraid of being flitty! Go for it. – post 1011 – HairOfTheDog

Seventeen years to research one mystical object seems a bit excessive… post 1007 - JenB

Okay...who's the wise guy who didn't renew Gandalf's research grant?… post 1024 – Overtaxed

To the very philosophical:

…Judas Iscariot obviously was a good man, or he wouldn't have been chosen to be one of the Apostles. He loved Jesus, like all of the Apostles, but he betrayed him. Yet without his betrayal, the Passion and Crucifixion would never have occurred, and mankind would not have been redeemed. So without his self-destruction infinite good would not have been accomplished. I certainly do not mean this to be irreverant but it seems to me that this describes the character of Gollum, in the scenes so movingly portrayed above… Lucius Cornelius Sulla

To fun but heartfelt debates about the integrity and worth of some of the characters…

…Anyone else notice how Boromir treats the hobbits? He's very fond of them but he seems to think of them as children - ruffling Frodo's hair, calls them all 'little ones'. He likes them, but I don't think he really respects them… post 1536 - JenB

Yes... Tolkien told us not to trust Boromir right off the bat when he began to laugh at Bilbo, until he realized that the Council obviously held this hobbit in high esteem. What a pompous dolt… post 1538 - HairOfTheDog

…I think almost every fault of his can be traced directly back to his blindness to anything spiritual or unseen. He considers the halflings as children, because that is what they look like. He considers the only hope of the ring to be in taking it and using it for a victory in the physical realm. He cannot see what the hobbits are truly made of, he cannot see the unseen hope of what the destruction of the ring might mean--the destruction of Sauron himself, and he cannot see the unseen danger that lies in the use of the ring itself… I just feel sorry for Boromir--he is like a blind but honorable man, trying to take the right path on the road but missing the right path entirely because he simply cannot see it… post 1548 - Penny1

Boromir isn't a jerk, he's a jock… post 2401 – Overtaxed

-----------------------------------------

Oh, I think by the time Frodo reaches the Cracks, he's not even himself anymore! I think he's not only on the brink of a dangerous place physically, he's on the brink of losing himself completely during the exchange with Gollum. But for some reason, the take-over isn't complete till he actually has to throw the Ring in. The person speaking to Gollum is not Frodo, but the "Wheel of Fire" that Sam sees. After the Ring is destroyed, Frodo not only comes back to himself, but comes back with the unbearable (to him) knowledge of what it's like to be completely without compassion. I think that's why it's so important to him to be compassionate in the Shire… post 2506 - 2Jedismom

…Regarding Frodo's compassion... it's a little too much at the end. Even Merry tells him that he's going to have to quit being so darn nice. But you're right. He's learned a lesson about evil that very few ever learn since it wasn't an external lesson but an internal one. (Those kinds of lessons have the greatest impact) Not only did he totally succumb to it, but he was rather ruthless to my little Smeagol… post 2516 - carton253

Well that Frodo was a big mean bully! (to Smeagol)… post 2519 – Overtaxed

So as you can see, everything JRR Tolkien (and Peter Jackson) is welcome here in our New Row, our soon-to-be familiar New Hobbit Hole…; philosophy, opinion, good talk and frequent silliness.

I'll bring some Diet Dr Pepper, right?

I'm still hoping a Midwesterner makes it to Entmoot and can bring Vernor's gingerale. Are there ANY folks in the Hole from the Midwest?

Ah, the unnamed crew member who always dies, right? (DId you see Galaxy Quest?)

Yes! That's another that's on my short list of DVDs I want to buy soon.

Oh, never been there. I have close friends from both Bloomington and Evansville.

I have a good impression of Midwesterners.

One of my friends from New York City was telling me this summer that she didn't want her daughter going to college in such a provincial area as the Midwest. However, all that proved to me is that New Yorkers are probably alot more insulated and narrow minded than Midwesterners.

I've been there several times! That's where my Mom went to highschool and where my Grandma still lives (plus some of my cousins).

I love it out there. I'm a born and bred New Englander, but over the course of the last 5 years or so, I've slowly started to get disgusted with this area. I have a hard time tolerating such a liberal mindset, liberal state government, liberal gun laws, liberal social programs...it takes a toll, having to live in an "Algore Blue" state.

The people out there, generally speaking, are friendlier, more polite, and move at a more relaxed pace. I couldn't believe it when a vehicle actually STOPPED to let me make a left-hand turn! And, to top it all off, they'll actually allow you to move in front of them on the highway, instead of speeding up and forcing you to fall behind. Amazing, isn't it?

We've thought of relocating on and off for the last two years now...the cost of living is unbelievably cheaper out there than it is here. But, I'd be hard pressed to find work equivalent of what I'm making out here...so...there's the rub.

I find New England very beautiful also, I think I feel that way about the entire country. But I agree about the leftist mindset. Ironic in an area that was so important in the birth of our country.

Out for awhile, will check in later.

This is one of the things that makes me afraid to drive in places bigger and scarier than here! People (with the exception of visitors) seem to be pretty good about following rules here. If you're on the freeway (which was two whole lanes, by the way), you stay on the right unless you're passing. Period. And if someone starts to pass you (on the left, as it should be), you might even slow down a tad to make it easier for them. You certainly don't speed up! Same goes for someone trying to get back over after passing...give them room! (Of course, we have a lot more room here than you would down there, but...)

No kidding!? That's awesome! Since you and The Mrs. are in close age proximity, I'd be willing to bet you two may have a few common aquaintances.

Her family's last names are Vance and Cougill.

You could try driving in Miami, where the population is dominated by Latins, immigrants from the Caribbean Islands who've never seen a city before, lots of retired New Yorkers, visiting Canadians and a dollop of rednecks.

Maybe half of us can speak English, personal philosophies on how to drive are unpredictable at best.

My cousins might know friends of hers...but I grew up here. My parents are both from the Midwest (Mom from Indiana, Dad from Wisconsin), but I was born in Oregon (which the people here pronounce ore-gone instead of oregun), and they moved here when I was four. So I'm not a "real" Vermonter (I think you have to have parents who were born here for that, anyway), but not a Midwesterner, either. Gal without a state...

No thanks!

I'm a real sissy when it comes to driving...I got my license late partly because of that, and I still refuse to drive in cities. I'll take a bus or a subway instead, though it may not be as convenient.

The craziest place for driving that I've EVER seen was Naples, Italy. Lanes? What lanes? Not to mention all the other nutsy things going on. We were told that signs, rules, etc. are just there to determine fault in an accident, not to be actually FOLLOWED.

I spend a lot of my time driving all over N.E., especially Boston and Hartford, and I have never had an easier time driving this area than I do when I'm in N.H. or VT.

Boston and Providence are "Kill or Be Killed" driving areas...it's insane.

My Dad refuses to drive in Boston. I used to fly in and out of Logan when I visited from Germany, and he said he'd gladly pay for my bus ticket out of there rather than drive in. I think it's even worse now, with the Big Dig project going on.

What's funny about you being afraid to drive in cities, is that I am the opposite. I am absolutely afraid to get on public transportation! And the basis of my fear? - That I don't know where it is going. I am afraid of going to the wrong place and not knowing where I am.

When I go on trips to strange cities I almost always take cabs if I am not driving. The exception to that was the streetcars in SanFrancisco. I figured they were slow enough that I could risk it...

Maybe I don't mind because I'm perpetually lost. I'm used to it! ;-) Seriously, I've gotten lost between here and Littleton, NH (which is about twenty minutes away, and has been the "big town" in my life since I was tiny!)

My brother and I went to NYC and used nothing but trains and busses to get around. It was inexpensive, and though we did occasionally get lost (usually trying to FIND the subway rather than IN it, though we did both), we mostly did OK. And now we laugh about the times we were lost!

But if you don't mind driving in traffic, I say more power to ya! I really wish I wasn't such a chicken...I feel like it restricts me a lot as there are so many places I'd like to visit and it would be much cheaper and easier to do it by car...if I wasn't so scared!

More like Hobbits Hate Cities! I LIKE driving HERE, actually. It's kind of relaxing, and there are long stretches of nice pretty backroads that I can just toodle along without worrying about nasty "outsiders" passing on the right or otherwise harassing me. We do have the occasional tailgaiting troll (especially at night), but mostly it's pretty pleasant here.
