And what icon would that be? Oh....this one?

I don't see anything wrong with it...

But, I think even those of us who like the adaptation have favorite little things from the book that we think didn't get translated quite right... ;)

My greatest disappointment so far has been the size of Bilbo's house. While it's quite nice and comfy, I got the impression from reading the book that it should be at least twice as long as Jackson shows it. I always felt that Bag End was on a pretty good-sized hill, and Bilbo's place took up a big chunk of it.

For that matter, the Party Field seemed a lot smaller than I thought it would be. And from the stills and trailers, Meduseld seems smaller than I imagined.

Of course, Moria was sufficiently grand in scale. And Jackson improved on Tolkien with the orcs, making them more nasty and disgusting than I perceived them from the books. It makes orc-killing a major beautification project.

How do you go about smoking things on a grill?

I usually buy a bag of hickory chips, soak them, and put them on a charcoal fire.

A few years ago I saw these hickory block things you could use instead of charcoal but I didn't try them when I had the chance. [sigh] I could always try using hickory thinnings cut out of the woods. :)

The poor guy gives up his life trying to defend Merry and Pippen and what is his legacy? Poster-Boy for the "Men are Weak" movement.......

Well, Isildur is really the founder of the movement, but Boromir is the poster boy....

Just so I understand, soaked in water?

Have you already watched the full screen version of the trailer?

Yes. You want a nice plume of smoke coming out of the smoker. Ummm....you'd need a grill with a vented lid on it. I usually do just a handful of chips for steaks...you don't need to soad the whole bag at one time.

I think your guy is seeing the problems accurately, but they are much less extreme than he thinks.

Agreed. Movies are an entirely different medium, and the story has to be adapted. FOTR, the movie, is as much PJ's art as JRRT's.

The main thrust of the article is that the movie does not convey the conservative, traditional Christian framework of the books sufficiently. I agree, but am not an absolutist - besides, it's SUCH a fun flick!

Looking forward to posting the article in full when its available (probably a couple of weeks) so that we can dissect it.
