The New Hobbit Hole

Welcome to The New Hobbit Hole

Concerning Hobbits

The New Hobbit Chronicles

This is a continuation of the infamous thread New Zealander Builds Hobbit Hole originally posted on January 26, 2001 by John Farson, who at the time undoubtedly thought he had found a rather obscure article that would elicit a few replies and die out. Without knowing it, he became the founder of the Hobbit Hole. For reasons incomprehensible to some, the thread grew to over 4100 replies. It became the place for hobbits and friends of hobbits to chit chat and share LoTR news and views, hang out, and talk amongst ourselves in the comfort of familiar surroundings.

In keeping with the new posting guidelines, the thread idea is continuing here, as will the Green Dragon Inn, our more structured spin-off thread, as soon as we figure out how to move all the good discussion that has been had there. As for the Hobbit Hole, we will just start fresh, bringing only a few mathoms such as the picture above with us to make it feel like home, and perhaps a walk down memory lane:

Our discussion has been light:

It very well may be that a thread named "New Zealander builds Hobbit hole" will end up being the longest Tolkien thread of them all, with some of the best heartfelt content... Sorry John, but I would have rather it had been one with a more distinguished title!… post 252 - HairOfTheDog

However, I can still celebrate, with quiet dignity, the fact that what started as a laugh about some wacko in New Zealand has mutated and grown into a multifaceted discussion of the art, literature, and philosophy that is Tolkien. And now that I've managed to write the most pompous sentence of my entire life, I agree, Rosie… post 506 - JenB

Hah! I was number 1000!! (Elvish victory dance... wait, no; that would be too flitty) … post 1001 - BibChr

Real men don't have to be afraid of being flitty! Go for it. – post 1011 – HairOfTheDog

Seventeen years to research one mystical object seems a bit excessive… post 1007 - JenB

Okay...who's the wise guy who didn't renew Gandalf's research grant?… post 1024 – Overtaxed

To the very philosophical:

…Judas Iscariot obviously was a good man, or he wouldn't have been chosen to be one of the Apostles. He loved Jesus, like all of the Apostles, but he betrayed him. Yet without his betrayal, the Passion and Crucifixion would never have occurred, and mankind would not have been redeemed. So without his self-destruction infinite good would not have been accomplished. I certainly do not mean this to be irreverant but it seems to me that this describes the character of Gollum, in the scenes so movingly portrayed above… Lucius Cornelius Sulla

To fun but heartfelt debates about the integrity and worth of some of the characters…

…Anyone else notice how Boromir treats the hobbits? He's very fond of them but he seems to think of them as children - ruffling Frodo's hair, calls them all 'little ones'. He likes them, but I don't think he really respects them… post 1536 - JenB

Yes... Tolkien told us not to trust Boromir right off the bat when he began to laugh at Bilbo, until he realized that the Council obviously held this hobbit in high esteem. What a pompous dolt… post 1538 - HairOfTheDog

…I think almost every fault of his can be traced directly back to his blindness to anything spiritual or unseen. He considers the halflings as children, because that is what they look like. He considers the only hope of the ring to be in taking it and using it for a victory in the physical realm. He cannot see what the hobbits are truly made of, he cannot see the unseen hope of what the destruction of the ring might mean--the destruction of Sauron himself, and he cannot see the unseen danger that lies in the use of the ring itself… I just feel sorry for Boromir--he is like a blind but honorable man, trying to take the right path on the road but missing the right path entirely because he simply cannot see it… post 1548 - Penny1

Boromir isn't a jerk, he's a jock… post 2401 – Overtaxed

-----------------------------------------

Oh, I think by the time Frodo reaches the Cracks, he's not even himself anymore! I think he's not only on the brink of a dangerous place physically, he's on the brink of losing himself completely during the exchange with Gollum. But for some reason, the take-over isn't complete till he actually has to throw the Ring in. The person speaking to Gollum is not Frodo, but the "Wheel of Fire" that Sam sees. After the Ring is destroyed, Frodo not only comes back to himself, but comes back with the unbearable (to him) knowledge of what it's like to be completely without compassion. I think that's why it's so important to him to be compassionate in the Shire… post 2506 - 2Jedismom

…Regarding Frodo's compassion... it's a little too much at the end. Even Merry tells him that he's going to have to quit being so darn nice. But you're right. He's learned a lesson about evil that very few ever learn since it wasn't an external lesson but an internal one. (Those kinds of lessons have the greatest impact) Not only did he totally succumb to it, but he was rather ruthless to my little Smeagol… post 2516 - carton253

Well that Frodo was a big mean bully! (to Smeagol)… post 2519 – Overtaxed

So as you can see, everything JRR Tolkien (and Peter Jackson) is welcome here in our New Row, our soon-to-be familiar New Hobbit Hole…; philosophy, opinion, good talk and frequent silliness.

Thanks for the details OT - I hadn't paid enough attention to the details like where and what office! ;~D

And the thing is, I agree with the lesser of two evils argument... When the Democrats are out and we have a majority, then we can try to find better candidates than the rinos, but we should get the democrats out first. We KNOW they aren't on our side. And in general, I do think that most third party candidates can never win and are a wasted vote for the right. If many on the right go that way, we will only get more democrats elected by splitting our vote. Then we have taken two steps backward rather than one forward.

So I agree with the fight JR is fighting! - But we need to fight it with the people who disagree, not just ban them! We have to try to convince them, if we are right. They are our easiest converts, and what we are lookin for is votes! - Now they can't be reached. I think it is sad, because he was never rude, only wrong. You'd think once you have been here awhile, you could disagree a little as long as you were not rude. And for the others gone recently, I think the libertarians were beginning to outnumber, or at least out-shout the Rebublicans a bit in some of the arguments, and JR doesn't want a libertarian site. A few of them are a good influence to an argument, but they were everywhere! - But again, not all of them were rude that were banned, they just differed. At least that is the complaint.

Anyway, Enough about this from me! - I don't want me or the Hobbit Hole to be in trouble around here too.

Good morning everyone...

Hair, I knew that it was the Yahoo HH site you were talking about last night... I just wondered why you were bringing it up at this time.

I'm sorry, I had taken antihistamines and was falling asleep, so I had gone to bed before your reply last night, which I why I didn't answer then.

Hope everyone has a good day!

Well, I will rewrite the ad anyway so I don't start any confusion or panic among the hobbits! I so hate to confuse everyone! I guess the wimmin-folk are just nesting... trying to make sure everyone is in!

Good morning! Did you end up getting any of the Lili weather? - Looked east of you, but maybe you got the edges?

Got any plans for the weekend?

Yes, I guess we are! I was starting to wonder if you weren't comin' back! Thought I might have to watch it here!

Have you found a cloak to wear? - I want to wear cloaks!

How do you like the new trailer? - Looks very good doesn't it!

Oooh, a cloak--that's a great idea! I bet I could make one if I can't find one to buy...I will try to look for patterns...in my spare time (yeah, right).

New trailer? Ummm....I am so out of it, I haven't seen it yet!! How sad is that??? It's on the official website, I presume....

Is there anyone else from our Hobbit-Hole in our area that wants to join us in the line party??

I so hate to confuse everyone!

Uhmmmm... it felt like you were making sure everyone had their life jacket on. But then I'm a suspicious sort.

Didn't get any of Lili's weather here, not even a fringe! But the weatherman says we may get some rain today or tomorrow from an unrelated front, and that would be a good thing. Hasn't rained here in a month, again.

Being without work at the moment, I did all of the little errands we normally leave to the weekend (shopping, etc.) during the week. So Rose and I don't have any plans this weekend beyond being lazy slugs, overdosing on football, and catching up on the shows we videotaped during the week. If the Windows 2000 OS I ordered earlier in the week comes in the mail today, we'll get it installed on our new computers, and begin transferring data over from our old ones! That would be fun!

Maybe "Scott from the Left Coast", he's from here in Olympia and might want to drive up there with me in the middle of the night! - Maybe my brother Ramius... Can't ever tell for sure! Maybe there are other lurkers that just haven't chimed in!

But dear, you must go get that trailer right away! I assume you saw the Treebeard pic above, you like him?

Being lazy slugs is a good thing on a weekend! - It is too wet for me to resume my winter pasture prep, unless I were really gung-ho, which I am not at the moment!

Excellent! We are well-prepared, then. I do have to make one trip out of the house to check our Post Office box, but other than that I don't expect to do anything useful until Monday!

Yes! I saw the Treebeard pic above--he looks so cool! Hopefully I'll get a chance to look at that trailer today. I feel like today is the first chance I've had to even breathe for months!

That would be cool if we could get a few folks to go with us. Should I be looking into a hotel room near the theater? I did some looking a couple of months ago, and prices were pretty high, even for basic/budget motels in the area, but I can keep looking if you would still like to do that...

Fun as it sounds, I will probably have to just get amped up on caffeine and come home again afterwards, (like I will need caffeine to be amped up)! Otherwise I would have to arrange for a farm-sitter to tend dogs and feed the ponies.

I am imagining a midnight run: put the ponies to bed around dark (which will be around 6:00 by then), then get ready, put on my cloak and go up there. After the movie we can find a nearby all-night cafe and share either some excited chatter or catatonic staring for a bit and then head home around 4:00 in the morning ;~D, get some sleep and catch the matinee to see it again and actually absorb it!

Do you even know Bear, Penny? You have been gone a long time! Do I need to introduce you? We are having parallel conversations!

I don't see it as a lesser of two evils thing. I see it as a get-rid-of-the-democrats first and deal-with-the-RINOs next strategy.

Yes, I know Bear.... ;) I haven't been AWOL THAT long, lol....

I like the sound of your plan....we will definitely have some chatting to do afterward! I hope we can get Scott to come up, it would be a lot easier for you to stay awake for the drive home if you have company.

Here's what I think the Cinerama does for opening nights for big films. I think they start lining up around noon (or earlier, I'm not sure), and then what they do is assign numbers to people based on when they get in line. I think they actually hand out some sort of entrance ticket with your number on it so that you don't have to literally stand there all day long. Then when it's time to open the doors they let you in by number. So if you come up in the evening, I'm not sure how that will affect how we get inside the theater. I'm pretty sure they sell out pretty quickly, so I'll even have to find out how we can get tickets early enough to guarantee we can see the first show.

I suppose it would be a good idea for me to ask on the line party community message board how it all works. Anyway, I'll start doing some research for us...
