Aragorn?
I thought we were talking about Boromir. Aragorn is definitely NOT a jock. Much too sensitive and intelligent to be a true jock.
To: HairOfTheDog
So Aragorn is not really a jerk... he's a jock.I would think I was having an acid flashback...but I never did any acid!
To: HairOfTheDog
Hehehe.....Aragorn was doing his part. But Boromir doesn't have a palantir and he doesn't read minds. How was he supposed to know?
To: HairOfTheDog
I can't believe I said that!
So Aragorn is not really a jerk... he's a jock.
I need more coffee!

I corrected it.... I was just waking up!
I have NOT gone "round the bend" really!
To: HairOfTheDog
Yeah, the rangers have just been off wandering the wilderness, not helping at all!Well, presumably they were fighting "behind the scenes" battles and preparing the ground for the coming dark times. Kind of like the CIA or something...
To: HairOfTheDog
I actually read it as Boromir!! Who needs coffee more? The person typing it wrong or the person reading it right!
To: 2Jedismom; HairOfTheDog
You both need massive infusions of this;^)

Either way, Arther is over...time for school. Later all!
To: rightwingreligiousfanatic
Why should he be listening to Aragorn immediately upon meeting him? He should just dissolve into an ingratiating, fawning puddle in front of Aragorn immediately upon learning who he is? Monday meeting...took me a bit to get back here.
That's not really what I'm saying, though I do think he could have been a little more open to Aragorn's authority. But it wasn't just Aragorn! Boromir hears about this Ring, this ultimate weapon and is excited because he sees it as the means of potentially saving his country. But then EVERYONE explains to him that, while it IS very powerful, it cannot be wielded by just anyone, and never for good.
This is repeated over and over again, but he is blinded by his desire to help his country (any maybe just a little warrior pride - desire for glory).
To: RosieCotton
Yes, he fails to see value in the wise.... He thinks he knows better!
To: RosieCotton
he is blinded by his desire to help his country (any maybe just a little warrior pride - desire for glory).Yes, this is basically what I am saying about him. And these traits, honorable as they may be in certain contexts, work to his destruction due to his lack of vision for the bigger picture.
But this is reason to pity him, not hate him. He is like a lot of us in America today....
To: rightwingreligiousfanatic
OK! - Thanks!
I am awake! Now that we admit how complex Boromir is, can we bash him? ;~D
To: rightwingreligiousfanatic
He is very much like Americans today... Though we don't see it, and Tolkien could not have predicted it.
To: rightwingreligiousfanatic
I don't HATE him. He's not my favorite character, but I don't think he's evil, either - just flawed, as all the characters are in their own way. (Part of what I like about Tolkien - none of them are really perfect!) And he redeemed himself in the end.
To: HairOfTheDog
Now that we admit how complex Boromir is, can we bash him?If it makes you feel better....[sigh]
To: RosieCotton
Thank you. We are on the same page, then. The genius of Tolkien is to weave these intricate characters together into the story and world we so love...
I guess I am taking your "bashing" too seriously....
To: RosieCotton
He was the fall guy... Somebody had to fall or Tolkien's premise was wrong... Tolkien gave us clues from the start that it would be Boromir who was the weakest link, I think Tolkien told us not to trust him when he laughed at Bilbo in the book... And PJ "got" that part too... We are told to watch out for this guy...
To: rightwingreligiousfanatic
"Gondor is kind of like America of today"
You mean Gondor is kind of dissolving into socialism? ;-)
Yeah, I agree that one of the ways the ring got Boromir was by drawing him to it's percieved ability to bring him glory.
To: HairOfTheDog
Well...his views needed adjusting. He was the sort of person who is primarily impressed with the sort of power he could understand - military or physical power, for the most part. He didn't see that someone like Bilbo or Frodo, who were so small and relatively weak, could be strong in a way he wasn't and couldn't really understand.
Am I making any sense?
