Yes, we have issues, but "things are terrible now, nothing like the good ole days" has been going on since the beginning of time! I think we live in an amazing time, and our opportunities for rich, comfortable and happy lives are greater than ever. In fact, life improves tenfold if you don't bury yourself in all the glum news of the day. If there are people living without television sets who just don't know how miserable life is, then maybe life is not really has miserable as we think!

When I was taking Latin III (Cicero) in high school, my teacher said something almost exactly like this in response to Cicero's famous statement 'O tempera!, O mores!' (o the times, o the morals!).
