The New Hobbit Hole

Welcome to The New Hobbit Hole

Concerning Hobbits

The New Hobbit Chronicles

This is a continuation of the infamous thread New Zealander Builds Hobbit Hole originally posted on January 26, 2001 by John Farson, who at the time undoubtedly thought he had found a rather obscure article that would elicit a few replies and die out. Without knowing it, he became the founder of the Hobbit Hole. For reasons incomprehensible to some, the thread grew to over 4100 replies. It became the place for hobbits and friends of hobbits to chit chat and share LoTR news and views, hang out, and talk amongst ourselves in the comfort of familiar surroundings.

In keeping with the new posting guidelines, the thread idea is continuing here, as will the Green Dragon Inn, our more structured spin-off thread, as soon as we figure out how to move all the good discussion that has been had there. As for the Hobbit Hole, we will just start fresh, bringing only a few mathoms such as the picture above with us to make it feel like home, and perhaps a walk down memory lane:

Our discussion has been light:

It very well may be that a thread named "New Zealander builds Hobbit hole" will end up being the longest Tolkien thread of them all, with some of the best heartfelt content... Sorry John, but I would have rather it had been one with a more distinguished title!… post 252 - HairOfTheDog

However, I can still celebrate, with quiet dignity, the fact that what started as a laugh about some wacko in New Zealand has mutated and grown into a multifaceted discussion of the art, literature, and philosophy that is Tolkien. And now that I've managed to write the most pompous sentence of my entire life, I agree, Rosie… post 506 - JenB

Hah! I was number 1000!! (Elvish victory dance... wait, no; that would be too flitty) … post 1001 - BibChr

Real men don't have to be afraid of being flitty! Go for it. – post 1011 – HairOfTheDog

Seventeen years to research one mystical object seems a bit excessive… post 1007 - JenB

Okay...who's the wise guy who didn't renew Gandalf's research grant?… post 1024 – Overtaxed

To the very philosophical:

…Judas Iscariot obviously was a good man, or he wouldn't have been chosen to be one of the Apostles. He loved Jesus, like all of the Apostles, but he betrayed him. Yet without his betrayal, the Passion and Crucifixion would never have occurred, and mankind would not have been redeemed. So without his self-destruction infinite good would not have been accomplished. I certainly do not mean this to be irreverant but it seems to me that this describes the character of Gollum, in the scenes so movingly portrayed above… Lucius Cornelius Sulla

To fun but heartfelt debates about the integrity and worth of some of the characters…

…Anyone else notice how Boromir treats the hobbits? He's very fond of them but he seems to think of them as children - ruffling Frodo's hair, calls them all 'little ones'. He likes them, but I don't think he really respects them… post 1536 - JenB

Yes... Tolkien told us not to trust Boromir right off the bat when he began to laugh at Bilbo, until he realized that the Council obviously held this hobbit in high esteem. What a pompous dolt… post 1538 - HairOfTheDog

…I think almost every fault of his can be traced directly back to his blindness to anything spiritual or unseen. He considers the halflings as children, because that is what they look like. He considers the only hope of the ring to be in taking it and using it for a victory in the physical realm. He cannot see what the hobbits are truly made of, he cannot see the unseen hope of what the destruction of the ring might mean--the destruction of Sauron himself, and he cannot see the unseen danger that lies in the use of the ring itself… I just feel sorry for Boromir--he is like a blind but honorable man, trying to take the right path on the road but missing the right path entirely because he simply cannot see it… post 1548 - Penny1

Boromir isn't a jerk, he's a jock… post 2401 – Overtaxed

-----------------------------------------

Oh, I think by the time Frodo reaches the Cracks, he's not even himself anymore! I think he's not only on the brink of a dangerous place physically, he's on the brink of losing himself completely during the exchange with Gollum. But for some reason, the take-over isn't complete till he actually has to throw the Ring in. The person speaking to Gollum is not Frodo, but the "Wheel of Fire" that Sam sees. After the Ring is destroyed, Frodo not only comes back to himself, but comes back with the unbearable (to him) knowledge of what it's like to be completely without compassion. I think that's why it's so important to him to be compassionate in the Shire… post 2506 - 2Jedismom

…Regarding Frodo's compassion... it's a little too much at the end. Even Merry tells him that he's going to have to quit being so darn nice. But you're right. He's learned a lesson about evil that very few ever learn since it wasn't an external lesson but an internal one. (Those kinds of lessons have the greatest impact) Not only did he totally succumb to it, but he was rather ruthless to my little Smeagol… post 2516 - carton253

Well that Frodo was a big mean bully! (to Smeagol)… post 2519 – Overtaxed

So as you can see, everything JRR Tolkien (and Peter Jackson) is welcome here in our New Row, our soon-to-be familiar New Hobbit Hole…; philosophy, opinion, good talk and frequent silliness.

I clicked to Join, and the "Ring" threads appear on the right-hand side of FR.
But, all the other Breaking News, Editorials etc have disappeared...??
How can I have both the Hobbit threads and all the other 'News" threads appear on the right side of screen??

You have to make sure that you are in the 'News/Activism' Forum, then click on 'Topics'. Click on a topic you want to be displayed in the sidebar, when that topic's threads are displayed, they will be a note saying that you aren't subscribed to the topick, and click on another part of the note to subscribe. When you click where instructed, the note will change to say that you are subscribed, and the most recent threads in that topic will be displayed under that topic's name in the sidebar.

Do not try to subscribe to more than 4 to 7 topics at first. As you subscribe to more topics, fewer threads are displayed for each on the sidebar, when you reach a certain point, no more topics will be displayed.

Just sipping my coffee and sifting through the news... wondering if there are any hobbitses about.

I have TTT trailer in my afternoon plans... anyone else?

Hobbitses are about and also sipping coffee. Will go tomorrow (thinking about going today, but I might get lazy after Easter dinner and opt for Ben Hur instead.)

About the picture thingy from yesterday... I don't get how I can do anything about it. I can't re-post the pictures where they are. What is your idea?

By the way... They still work for me... Rumor is that is because they are in my cache. If you go to the site of the picture, and then return, it should appear. Does it?

Good morning! I just got back from Easter service, and am having my morning Dr Pepper (I don't do coffee) and reading about the latest bombing in Israel. Don't know if I will be able to catch the trailer again today, I have lots of stuff to catch up on.

Good morning! - Is there caffeine in Dr. Pepper? Hmm... Washing dogs is hard work. I think I am going to have to have more coffee before I get started. BTW... Lazamataz thinks I am a hippy.

It was at the theater at Ethan and Arden. Is that specific enough? I can look up the name if you want.

Happy Resurrection Day everyone! And it's beautiful here today! We just had lunch with my parents after services and boy that was good. Then the boys have been playing outside and having a great time. I got a new lawn chair (one of my folk's old ones) that reclines and I'm going to go sit out in the backyard and read and bask in this beautiful weather!

Yes it does. I sent you freepmail with more details, but the gist is that everyone who wants to see the pictures will have to go to the site for each picture first. This is deliberate on JohnRob's part I think -- he seems not to want this location used as a place to store pictures. Check with Texaggie79.

Just got back from taking a friend of mine to see the preview again...

WOW

...and now, I have a question....

In the preview, is there a shot of Eowyn dressed in armor riding a horse and looking sad? (I'm remembering that "everything makes me sad" from above, lol). I could not place the person in that one shot at all, and they looked so strange, until I realized that maybe that was her. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

I really like that impressive shot of Aragorn, Legolas, Theoden and Gimli atop the walls of Helm's Deep. Wow.

I find that I can remember more now...Gandalf on Shadowfax is just amazing. And when the 4 walk forward together (I think they're approaching Theoden), they look so forceful.

For some reason, the way the preview is structured, I'm recognizing a huge contrast between Aragorn's character-arc and Frodo's. As the one becomes stronger and more powerful, the other grows steadily weaker. I don't know why I hadn't thought of that before. I love the contrasts and comparisons we are getting between Gandalf the White and Saruman the White. I can see that they're going to demonstrate how Gandalf the White is Saruman the White as he should have been. Gandalf looks an awful lot like an angel, which I think is really cool. ;)

I noticed that Frodo looks so very different already--older and so haggard. If this is how he looks in TTT, I can't imagine how worn down he will be by RotK! And Merry and Pippin--there isn't much of them in the preview, but they included some pretty intense moments, didn't they? And I just LOVE Pippin's double-take at Treebeard.

I just LOVE the way Theoden's poem punctuates the images of the coming battle. And I can't wait to see the scene when Gandalf sends Wormtongue packing!

I think it's a little odd that they just show images of Faramir looking into the distance--are they saving the interaction between him and Sam and Frodo for a later trailer? Or what? Or do they want that to be a surprise?

I have to admit, I like that little look Aragorn gives Eowyn--a little surprised how well the girl can fight, huh? LOL.

It seemed to me they even had Gimli riding behind Gandalf, just like in the book, and they also had Shadowfax leading the way, just like in the book. It is so fun watching these things begin to come to life like this!

IS IT DECEMBER YET?????????

Observations from the movie (yes, I STILL notice new things!) I think it was 2JM that mentioned how Merry ALWAYS is eating. This time through, I noticed all the times he was munching on an apple. The funniest one was by the time they all had plopped down to rest at Weathertop, Merry already had his apple a third of the way eaten. LOL. He's also munching on an apple when Frodo is reunited with them in Rivendell. Somehow, it was just too funny...

Also, I was struck by the similarity of Isildur wearing the ring around his neck and Frodo doing the same. And every time I see the scene with Elrond leading Isildur into the crack of Doom and the ring whispering to Isildur, I think of Frodo's scene when it is his turn to walk in there. I wonder if there will be similarities between the two scenes.

Had a terrific crowd at the theater...someone whooped it up when Aragorn took Lurz's head off and we all clapped, and we all clapped at the end of the preview too.

I have seen some rumors that PJ said they would be putting this preview online at the official site in a few weeks, once the movie has left the theaters. I hope that's true, and I get the feeling if he can, he will do that. There are too many people who can't see it because their theater isn't showing the movie anymore. I sure hope they plan this better for next year!
