Much depended on how long they were in the ocean, in relatively warm water. In the ocean there are worms (acually mollusks) which burrow into and eat wood. At the time they did not have good anti-worm protections, so the wooden ships got eaten while they were in the ocean.

I doubt many got over 20,000 miles before they needed a major overhaul.

Some protection could be had by keeping them in fresh water for a days or months. The worms would die in fresh water, as I understand it.
