There is speculation that Obama's mother had a black ancestor in 17th-century Virginia, the first African sentenced to lifelong slavery, a man named Punch, whose descendants later went by Bunche. if so, Obama is a distant cousin of Ralph Bunche, the first black American to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. (But Ralph Bunche actually did something to deserve the prize.)
