“These cars of the very near future are inexpensive, safe, fuel efficient...”

When a light car hits or is hit by a heavier vehicle, the smaller vehicle absorbs much more of the physical force. According to safety research from the National Safety Council, being hit by a vehicle that weighs 1,000 pounds more increases the risk of death for the occupant of the smaller car by about 47%.

Many subcompacts and minicars historically perform poorly in specialized safety tests, such as small overlap crashes or side impacts with taller barriers, which can allow the steering column or vehicle frame to intrude into the driver’s space as tiny cars have less physical space (shorter hoods and closer structural boundaries) to absorb impact energy before it reaches the passenger cabin.

Limited Cargo and Seating Space: Interior room is tight, making them unsuited for large families, bulky luggage, or long road trips.

Lower Horsepower and Performance: Smaller engines struggle with slow acceleration, hard passing on highways, and climbing steep inclines, especially when fully loaded. Small or downsized engines often use more fuel than expected in real-world driving. Drivers must rev small engines harder and accelerate more abruptly to keep up with traffic, ruining EPA or lab fuel economy ratings.

Less Comfortable Ride: Short wheelbases and lighter frames can make the ride feel bumpier, noisier, and less smooth over rough pavement than mid-size or full-size vehicles.

Visibility and Road Presence: Because they sit lower to the ground and have a smaller frame, drivers of larger trucks and SUVs may have a harder time spotting them in traffic.

And last but not least, open the sales of a novelty item and the price just went up at least 15% making them competitive with other cars. The people that make them don’t want to step on their other products. They lose money that way so they will have to make it up.

There are still bugs to this.

Just make them illegal on freeways.

Town cars only.

I could use one in that capacity.

My first car was a 1975 Honda Civic. 53 horsepower. 1800 pounds. I loved it! Passing was tough. I had to plan in advance. Uphill meant using my manual transmission and sometimes going slower. But it was a fun little car.

It would also fail to meet modern safety standards, most of which I think are garbage meant to make people feel good but not worth the price.
