Man’s inhumanity to man is well-documented. If some individual, or group, has the opportunity to take total control, it is likely that they will. Then their solitary aim will be to maintain control.
I think communist China and fundamentalist Iran are current examples. The Soviet Union under Stalin was an example. These totalitarian regimes are hard to defeat even with external assistance. With one-world government, there would be no external assistance.
Prudent, wise, benevolent leaders would be aware of the threat and prevent the accumulation of too much power. Unfortunately, I agree with Hayek that the worst will rise to the top. Words of wisdom from James Madison:
