What a stupid, evil thing to say. She might have been more "popular" because they would rape or kill her if she didn't comply? Or any of a dozen other ways to be mistreated or forced in a culture so intent on personal gratification at any cost. When she says "survival", she means SURVIVAL.
I wonder if you have ever had to survive anything, except maybe a missed meal.
