A true shame so many of those portrayed never got to see it like my father.
He had a front page photo in some NY paper showing him on Okinawa administering an IV to a Marine on a stretcher.
That B & W grittiness and mud were well shown in The Pacific.
Agreed. It resonates hard here in Alabama. The film drew upon 2 memoirs written by U.S. Marine veterans - 1 of which, With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa (1981) was by Alabamian Eugene ("Sledgehammer") Sledge, who served as a mortar team crew member during Peleliu and Okinawa. It was brutal reading. Sledge suffered from shell shock/combat fatigue/PTSD for the rest of his life. He eventually became a biology professor at the University of Montevallo. I have 2 friends who took his class during the mid-1970s.
