I'm reading about Richard F, Burton who was a British explorer and traveled to Africa toward the end of the 19th century.
He was appalled that Chieftains routinely killed tribesmen and left their bodies around the village, JUST to prove the power they held and to impress travelers! Again...it was the end of the 19th century!
On his expedition, he hired bearers who quit whenever they felt like it and hardly worked, when they stayed. Once paid, every one of them bought alcohol and slaves.
One bearer bought a woman to carry the load HE was paid to carry and when she hurt her foot, he killed her. He had paid for her and was not going to leave her behind as a gift to someone else!
