The founder of the world’s biggest weekly car show was killed Saturday when his McLaren slammed into a tree in California, split in two and burst into flames in a horrific early-morning crash.
James Wehr, 27, the owner of South OC Cars and Coffee, died in the wreck along with another driver, whose identity had not been released.
The deadly crash happened around 12:20 a.m. at the intersection of Culver Drive and Deerfield Avenue in Irvine, police said.

was alcohol involved?
The young, especially the young and rich, think they're immortal.
All the above

Reminds me of Paul Walker
My daughter loves those shows, and goes to them regularly, including the Scottsdale Cars and Coffee (at some point they didn’t have coffee available, despite the name).
Even though there is a camaraderie about those who attend and keep running into each other, I suspect the first response will be, “A McLaren? Oh no!”
When I went with her, my favorite car was an early 1920s Bugatti in driveable condition. That car dominated the European circuit for most of the decade, and exceeded 100 mph, if I recall. EXTREMELY minimalist, and open top. I wouldn’t have a prayer of fitting inside, much less drive it, but could just marvel at such a vehicle being made and driven 100 years ago.
I’m going to go out on a limb here, but I suspect James Wehr was exceeding the speed limit.

When the car involved is a McLaren, the term “high rate of speed” certainly leaves some questions as to the specifics....
I wonder if he was speeding a little maybe...
my Cadillac CTS-V goes over 200 mph and it does it right now. You really have to know what you are doing and be careful because things can get out of control very fast!!!
The Autobahn is Germany’s federal controlled-access highway system, spanning over 12,000 kilometers (7,500 miles), famous for having no general speed limit on a significant portion of its network.
He found out we don’t have one the hard way.
We get some of that Southern CA supercar gang coming to Scottsdale about 2-3 times a year.
DDE (Daily Driver Exotic) is the primary instigator.
Mostly Lambo and McClaren.
The Local clubs ban them from their events as its all about reckless driving and sideshows.
Not surprised one of them did a “Paul Walker”
We need to ban trees right now.
The crash happened 14 miles from my home. No, it was not the autobahn. It wasn’t even the 405. It was on a surface street. The location was just two streets over from where Charles “Mask” Lewis, one of the founding members of the popular Tapout clothing brand, died in a crash of his Ferrari while street racing in 2009. Too much money, too much speed, and not enough sense.
It was not the autobahn
In his mind it was paid the price for it.
It’s a regular occurrence in South Florida for the same reasons.
Any person that has driven a closed course circuit knows there a limits that cannot be exceeded and once beyond those limits, getting control back is much harder than keeping it in the first place. Municipal roadways have nothing in common with purpose-built road courses.
Two lives lost to poor decisions. Very sad and completely unnecessary.

The greatest problem seldom discussed with regard to speed is the faster something occurs, the shorter the response time to deal with it. Laymen have neither the training nor the experience to deal with it effectively.
