My primary flight instructor used to say “never fall in love with a landing”. I didn’t get it at first then I found out it means we all get it wrong every once in a while so no shame in going around.
When you land at a Navy Air facility, before final, the pilot is required to say “landing checklist complete, gear down and locked, READY FOR THE GO AROUND”.
That about says it all.
One more thing ... when they land on a carrier, they slam in FULL POWER ... only reduce to idle when it is clear they caught a wire.
It’s baked in to NavAir that the landing is fxxked until proven otherwise.
Too bad these two pilots didn’t have that mentality.
