I had a Marxist roommate in college in the early 1980’s for about 6 months. He was a “refugee” from what he used to rail about, “Juan Peron’s Fascist right-wing juntas”. He’d go on at length about “the disappeared” and all I wanted to do was use the kitchen table to study. He moved out - thankfully - to be with his fellow draft-dodgers (I was prior service Army - 7 years - on inactive reserve during undergrad on GI bill) and, I thought, very apolitical.
But it always amazed me, how Peron’s government policies sounded SO socialist, how Evita lived like a Queen and was the heroine of leftists throughout the world with Broadway and Hollyweird all celebrating her; all very confusing.
so he threw communists out of helicopters because what, they were competition?
I lived there as a boy for a couple of years right before “the disappeared” became a thing. They wanted clothes, documents, who knows what else, and indeed, tried to break into our house when my mother was there with my little sister. They were met with a shotgun blast and we had to leave soon after.
They were leftists opposing the ruling junta at the time and met the wrath of that opposition.
Ultimately the military after a humiliating defeat in the Falklands/Malvinas lost power and peronists/socialist resumed their reign of economic and social destruction. Milei has been a notable departure.
I suspect at the earliest opportunity, Peronism will be back.
We are equally enamored in the US with such irrational socialism.
