Without knowing any details, it might just mean that her mother-in-law is a kind person who sees the best in others.

Not really. Remember Jeffrey McDonald? The Captain at Fort Bragg who killed his pregnant wife and two daughters?

The seemed the perfect family to everyone. He was highly thought of and respected until the murders happened.

His wife’s family were 100% behind him and stuck up for him. The even spoke in his defense at a military inquisition. He was actually not charged by the military of the murders.

Until he got flippant about the story on a TV show. That got the dead wife’s parents enraged and their eyes opened to who this person actually was. They went on a many years journey to get him held accountable and they were successful. After a long hiatus, he was convicted of their murders and is still in prison. He was a total sociopath and narcissist. He came off as normal and likeable as your best friend, but he was dark and conniving inside. He keeps trying to find ways to get out of prison, but has never been released.
