Seeing that these prosecutors are from an extremely leftist state, I'm not so sure that they intend to do a better job. It's not beyond the realm of possibility that they tacitly want a guilty verdict to be avoided, despite their stated position.

Lawyers have a very limited number of peremptory challenges, and can only request that the judge to exclude others for cause. There are a lot of times you just get stuck with a bad jury, and there's nothing you can do about it.

The bigger issue is going to be charging her with a lesser offense - I think that's what defense counsel is trying to avoid.
