For several years the Red Cross would not allow blood donations from people who had spent 6 months or more in Europe after Jan. 1, 1980, because of mad cow disease. For several years I could not donate because of that, until they changed it to five years in Europe. (Meanwhile people who have lived all their lives in Europe can donate blood there.)

Their questionnaire now is full of questions about sexual activity in the past 3 months trying to weed out people who might transmit HIV. I don't know if 3 months is a long enough time frame.
