The essence of Leftism is convincing one class of people in a society that they are being victimized by and are owed something by another class of people. The groups designated as "victim" and "victimizer" change over time but the form remains the same.

While Bernie Sanders and other octo and nonogenerian lefties still rail against "the billionaires", that's not really what animates most of the progressive left today. Racial, ethnic, and sexual grievances are much more central to their worldview. Same form, different content.
