I hope you aren’t using American flour. Italian flour is the best and “unfortified”. 4 times now I’ve “cured” people with gluten intolerance with Italian flour. I buy Anna Napoletana Tipo 00. $30 for an 11lb bag at Amazon.
No use of potassium bromate.
I wish I could store 50lbs. I have to put flour in the fridge or it gets weevils. I’ve tried everything for dry storage, but they still come.
They were almost certainly in the flour when you bought it, just too small to detect.
Exactly, you buy them with the flour. I've tried freezing them for a week which works to an extent, but there will still be a reduced number hatching later.
My dad was the engineering officer aboard a Marine landing ship in the south pacific in WWII. The weevils were unavoidable in the biscuits and the everyone at mess would put up a pot of change and all would bang their biscuits on the plate and count the number of weevils that came out... high man won.
The Marines choose the lesser of weevils! 😉
