1 dead and 5 wounded in a shooting at a rave in Switzerland

GENEVA (AP) — A shooting at a rave in the northern Swiss canton of Aargau left one person dead and five wounded early Sunday, local police and media reported. Police said they are still looking for potentially more than one suspect.

Aargau cantonal police wrote earlier on X that a 22-year-old woman died of injuries at the scene. Four men and one woman, between 24 and 27 years old, were taken to the hospital with injuries ranging from minor to severe.

All of the victims are residents of Switzerland, police said. They did not release their names in line with Swiss privacy rules.

“The manhunt is continuing nonstop at full speed,” police spokesperson Bernhard Graser told reporters on Sunday afternoon.

He said police had no information yet about possible motives. Asked whether a terrorist attack was a possibility, Graser said that “the fact that the rave was already winding down suggests that’s not the case. A fight could also be a possibility.”

Public shootings are rare in the Alpine country despite relatively widespread gun ownership.

“In terms of its nature, this incident is certainly unique in recent years,” Graser said. “We don’t yet know the full extent of it, but based purely on the circumstances, it is something truly extraordinary. That’s why there’s such a large police presence.”

Authorities were alerted around 2:30 a.m. to the shooting in the canton’s capital Aarau, 46 kilometers (29 miles) west of Zurich, Police spokesperson Pascal Wenzel told Swiss public broadcaster SRF.

The police have been very tight lipped about the whole incident. They imply that they know little or nothing about the shooter(s) which seems unlikely as there would have been sufficient witnesses. At the same time they claim there is no threat at the moment as they have indications that the shooters are no longer in the area (make of that what you will).

Different culture and social norms. Someone’s comment about ‘carrying’ in Switzerland would strike the Swiss as insane. That’s ‘what I’m talking about.’ Good grief!

I visit Paris almost every year. I haven’t had any bad experiences. I remember a lot of great ones. Like the lady on the bus that leaned over and asked my son a few questions. We got off with her and walked several blocks. Airbnb hosts! One that knocked on the door with a bottle of wine in his hand. And many amusing waiters. I’ve stayed at a small hotel several times. Always the same kid with the night slot; always amazed to see me.

Not making any excuses, but in the last 30 years I have lived here, the Muslims have been mostly peaceful.

I’m glad you’ve had good experiences in Paris. I didn’t find Parisians to be nearly as open, warm and nice as I found most French people outside of Paris. I visited a friend of mine from Alsace when he was living in Paris. He did not have a positive view of the place and that attitude was echoed by a couple other friends of mine from France over the years.....you’ll hear much the same from many Brits about London and many Americans about NYC. I’ve even had a few Russians tell me the rest of Russia thinks that about Moscow.

I agree with you 100 percent. Folks outside of Paris are proabably warmer than in Paris, but that could be the case with any large metropolitan area. Maybe. For example, 15 months ago I visited NYC for the first time in 40 years. People were wonderful. I thought like mid-westerners. (a lot may have been.) Also, in June I did the Robert Louis Stevenson trail SW of Lyon. 13 hard days. Everyone on the trail were french, and some belges and swiss, a german lady. Apart from an English couple that the first couple of days, I was the lone hiker from either the US or the UK. The entire time that they were spreading a wing over me. As far as politics goes, a few times I had to explain to groups that Trump is not Louis Quatorze. Explained separation of powers, and state, etc. In settings, there were a lot of nods. That said, French culture is what it is. Marvelous in many ways. Don’t emigrate there. Just visit, and importantly, enjoy your meals! And be happy!

The perpetrator likely used an AK-74
A map shows the locations where two sets of shell casings were found. According to the police, the ammunition found came from two different weapons: “We found two calibers. These included 9-millimeter casings, such as those used in pistols or submachine guns. And 5.45 × 39 caliber, as used in assault rifles,” said Operations Commander Matthias Schildknecht on Sunday evening. According to Schildknecht, over a dozen such casings were found.

5.45 × 39 is the standard caliber of the Russian AK-74 assault rifle, which was introduced in 1974 and is considered a further development of the well-known AK-47.

This is not something any normal swiss person could obtain legally.

This is the only real information that the police have released - still no info regarding the number of shooters or any description. They did not rule out terrorism, but think it unlikely due to the fact that there would have been a better time (just one hour earlier for example) for such an act. I find the fact that an AK-74 or similar weapon was used to be strange - and the fact that they are extremely tight lipped about everything.

I tend to agree with an earlier comment - someone did something.

Obviously, there are some reservations in many countries, which the more „rural“ folks hold against the citizens of the metropolises…

Update (likely Final)

On Monday, a suspect was apprehended but, as is normal here, very little information was released. This is frustrating as the public was not really relieved due to the lack of information (e.g. the only statement was “Strong suspicion of Guilt”)

This afternoon, a press conference was held:

1. shooter acted alone - over 40 rounds fired from the AK
2. 43 year old Swiss man with no migration background
3. turned himself in saying he was the shooter
4. 2 AK-74s and a 9mm Pistol in his car
5. has a history of mental illness (not further defined)
6. no criminal history
7. drove in the early morning hours from the Canton of Jura, to Aarau
8. is considered an amok shooting.
9. AKs were obtained legally 20 years ago (Canton Jura had very lax approvals for 23 year olds apparently)

We likely wont hear much more about this until the trial which can take a very long time. The Swiss judicial system is extremely strict regarding the release of information.
