Caregivers often die before the ones they care for, for this very reason. I was in great health before taking care of my FIL with dementia for 5 years. Even just the physical and social limitations of being homebound with him, and lack of sleep, took its toll.
I don’t have cancer (thank the good Lord) but I have other issues that started during that time that I am dealing with at the moment. I am so glad his hospice nurse urged me to go get tests/physicals/bloodwork which helped me identify what was going on (and rule out other things).
Still, I would not have traded a moment of time caring for DH’s dad. He was an amazing person.

People have no idea what it is like unless they go through it themselves.
