I don't understand why a provincial premier like Doug Forrd, more or less the equivalent of a state governor, has any say so over Canada's foreign policy. As bad as Newsom, Walz, Hochul, and Spanberger are, I don't recall them butting in on foreign policy matters under either Biden or Trump.

Then I think you missed some things. For example Abbott said pretty much the exact same things that Ford is when he said he was not afraid to use the Texas economy against Canada.

Some of it has to do with the history of Canada, which was assembled piecemeal. Some has to do with the fact that in some key ways (e.g. income tax collection), Canada is actually more provincial rights oriented than the U.S. is state rights oriented.

It IS a different country.
