According to the article, the girl had previously interacted with the dog without any issues.
The article also says that the house is adjacent to the woods that have wildlife.

You would think that if it was the dog that killed the girl, it would have a blood on its fur. The fact that the police are leaving open other possibilities would suggest that the dog (deceased per article) may not have been responsible.
