I believe that what is different is that back in your day, investigating, fact checking, source verifying, and accuracy were important.
These days, “publishers” pull information from feeds, and figure out the best click-bait way to exploit the very limited information that they are receiving.
It’s a completely different process at it’s roots.
The old school press dug into their stories.
The new media are information parasites.
