The Senate needs to go back to being the voice of the states as an institution. Repeal of the 17th Amendment will do that!
State legislatures couldn’t do worse. For example highly doubtful a date legislature would appoint the same person more then twice. Plenty state legislators and grand poo-bahs would lust for that job!

The problem is the advantage of seniority, it benefits the state to have the same person there for many terms for appropriation purposes.

Said that for years. We’d have over 70-75 (or more) Republican senators if it was still up to the state legislatures.

An Amendment is almost impossible to overturn. The debate would be intellectual, above the pay grade of most. No 100% paying attention like the OJ trial. You start with the dissatisfaction simmering beneath the surface and hope it becomes a volcano. This issue doesn’t rise to the test but it could start with embers.
