The Senate can institute a rule that once a month, the citizen constituents of each state will be able to vote electronically on whether they wish to retain or dismiss their senator. It’s that the possibility of removal changes behavior long before Election Day.

Better idea. Full REPEAL of the 17th Amendment. It’s time.
Most states have an “open” primary. Most voters are independents. They vote in the primary for one party or the other and are often switch-hitters. But most voters are not “loyal” to their party.

Currently, both polls of professionals and amateurs, and talk shows on TV and the internet do not ask and discuss questions honestly. They frame the question to get the pre-determined answer they want.
Most voters Favor Voter ID...but not every part of SAVE. Each side pitches that part of the complex, illogically worded SAVE to push their agenda.
Most voters approve of DOGE and see the war in Hormuz as a waste of money. But each side frames their questions to get the answer they want.
There is no such thing as an honest, objective question and objectivity is the enemy of both sides.

Trump needs to call him out in December-make him quit. Do the same with Thune and Murkowski. All are up on ‘28.

Better just return the election of senators to the state legislatures
YES! A Senator who votes to usurp State powers must answer to the Legislature against which he offended.
The founders did not foresee career politicians, or congress meeting between election day and the start of a new congress. I am for term limits and moving the date of a new Congress to a week after election day. The lame ducks are not necessary. I am not sure about how to handle politicians who lose a primary. That could be more difficult.
Problem with creating a scale as to whether the individual is doing the job is that the public has no idea what they are doing. When you put a vote to people, especially thousands, with a thouand reasons to be happy, it isn’t realistic. One man/woman can’t be all things to all people. And with the fickled rections of the citizens in our recent past especially, they have no idea how to govern or even decide what’s first to entertain. So you’get people in the mail room runing the board of directors and firing them when they can’t satisfy a few with all the different pieces of a state:
income, racial breakdown, education level, businesses, information availability, raw materials...lots more in the mix. And the least informed are the ones taking the survey.

I appreciate any effort to help find a solution to this extraordinary problem we have in Congress.
I believe one of the best solutions is either returning to the original concept of Senators appointed by the States or implementing term limits.
I especially support the concept of a term limit structure that prevents life long political careers by restricting office and/or agency hopping to avoid term limit restrictions.
How about we just pass term limits?
As an alternative I would settle for waterboarding them annually to find out what corruption, treason, deceit and pillaging of the public they have been engaged in. Then when we have that info we can vote accordingly.
I’d have to say no to this idea, that smacks too much of “popular democracy” loathed by our Founders, and also makes Senators subject to viral hysteria as well as well-funded click-farm activism.
People won’t take the time to examine the issues closely before shooting off their virtual mouths. Sometimes Senators won’t vote for a bill not because of its main purpose, but because of all the toxic riders and pork inserted in it, but will vote for it after it is cleaned up.
You’ve got a point. It’s the peoples business so popular votes for senate make some sense, only some. I can remember when many didn’t want the sessions televised. THAT was the peoples business but too many of them perform for the cameras. Bring up sex and more people will watch-think Clarence Thomas.
Idiotic. We need to do the opposite and repeal the amendment that placed the Senate under mob rule in the first place. We already have direct election of the House of Representatives. The Senate should be appointed by State governments to give them a leash on totalitarian central government as well.
