I assumed there were more old timers here than just myself - we didn’t even have a bathroom to get locked into!! Ours was a few steps OUTSIDE the house - QUITE a few in fact...guess that’s why it became known as the “outhouse”....As a little kid, I was fond of throwing my shoes down...wondering how far down they would go, I guess. Probably after once or twice of that, my folks took my shoes away..I would have if it had been my child - maybe that’s why we went barefoot all summer. I fell through the ice pond one year when my brother was ice skating...he dragged me out and raced to the house with me on the sled...In spite of it all - GREAT memories....I can’t be the only one here who grew up on a farm....
Not so great memory...
One year I was sent to a summer camp (the parents got a vacation from having the kids around), and the facilities were outhouses. I already knew about such things as my grandfather had one at his summer home.
Once a week, we were required to take actual showers with running water. Each kid in turn was taken into the shower, and “adults” scrubbed us down with heavy brushes. It didn’t occur to me what was actually going on at the time.
We also had weekly evening trips to go swimming at the lake, in the nude. They called it “skinny dipping”. I never knew who or what was was lurking in the woods, just watching or filming us.
Nothing bad ever happened to any of us, as far as I know.
Ha ha ha… That sounds like a real kid thing to do, throwing your shoes down the outhouse to see how far down they go!
