The Media Takes the Fifth and Denounces Those Questioning Fauci as an “Assault on Science”
Jonathan Turley ^

Posted on 08/03/2026 3:20:08 PM PDT by Tench_Coxe

As I wrote yesterday, Dr. Anthony Fauci was not the only one taking the Fifth yesterday on his record during the pandemic. The media effectively invoked the same privilege to avoid self-incrimination for their years of deifying the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Across the cable networks, hosts and guests were going into vapors as Republican senators pummelled Fauci over his COVID policies and the glaring contradictions found in his diary entries. Some, like Dr. Scott Ratzan, echoed Fauci’s own prior claim that any questioning of his judgment was an attack on science.

(snip)

Many previously echoed Fauci’s view that questioning these conclusions was an attack on science. One leading columnist wrote a piece titled “The COVID lab leak claim isn’t just an attack on science, but a threat to public health.”

“”I No Longer Trust Anyone...””

https://www.zerohedge.com/personal-finance/i-no-longer-trust-anyone

“They reported neighbours for having too many people over for dinner. They cut off family members who wouldn’t take the shot. They posted smug little memes about how the unvaccinated were selfish and stupid while their own kids were losing years of school and their elderly parents were dying alone in nursing homes. They did it with a clear conscience, because the authorities had given them permission to be cruel.

That’s the part that still sticks in my throat. Not the government lying—governments always lie when it suits them. Not even Big Pharma doing what Big Pharma does—make scads of money and not giving a crap who suffers for it. It was the ordinary people, the ones I used to think were mostly harmless, who turned out to be so willing to turn on anyone who stepped out of line.

The masked Karens. The vaccine passport enthusiasts. The ones who genuinely seemed to enjoy punishing others for non-compliance. I saw longtime friends and even family members do things I would have sworn they were incapable of. And they did it without a second thought. That’s what really got to me—not the betrayal itself, but how easily it came to them. How little it seemed to cost them.”

“claiming that the lab-leak claim is “an assault on science” when Fauci’s own notes show that he believed it (even as he publicly denied it)”

In one of his diary entries he did say that he didn’t buy China’s claim that the wet market was the “origin”, but he did think that the market served as an “amplifier” of the disease.

He also confessed to not being an evolutionary biologist and was deferring their opinion on some aspect of the virus.

I didn’t see him reveal an opinion regarding a lab leak in the sections that I ran across. But I did see him endorse a natural origin for the virus, which was probably part of his evolutionary biologist comment.

Great post.

Fortunately that did not describe our family—who kept everything civil and civilized.

But—I certainly would not trust anyone I did not know extremely well.

Most folks here in CT got jabbed multiple times—which means they were and are a menace to themselves and others—because they can be brainwashed to do anything by a bit of propaganda.

What I see is him privately conceding that the virus was likely a lab leak based on articles like this one. But the community was aware that conceding this in public would look terrible for them, so they were altering or suppressing the arguments favoring this.

Thirty years ago as a college student I read a book by a Marxist Ivy League scientist (Niles Eldredge), The Monkey Business, in which he openly called for this sort of behavior. He advised deplatforming opponents, censoring and refusing to publish anything they wrote, and forming committees in every college to enact this agenda and to guard against the opponents gaining a foothold in academia, and to harass and persecute dissident students. As a naive college student who thought "science" was supposed to be objective and, well, science-based, it was a horrific wake-up call. It showed me how "science" really works in elite circles.

I see a direct link between the behaviors advocated in the book, and what we saw in the case of COVID. And that doesn't surprise me, because Fauci's right-hand man was Francis Collins, who came out of the same worldview as Eldredge and was quite open about applying the same policies of censorship, deplatforming and suppression using the good ol' boys network of elite academia.

... Fauci invoked the privilege 111 times. That fell short of Vito Genovese’s record, who invoked the privilege 150 times.
Rather than address the long list of criticisms and contradictions for Fauci, the media rallied...

That two bitprick - Fauci - should have been asked 160 questions...Next time Rand Paul... next time.

Questioning things is the fundamental basis of science. If “science” can’t handle or is afraid of being questioned, it isn’t real science.

Oh good grief, weld that demon possesed Fauci into a steel box.

.

The progs will NEVER admit they were, and are, wrong.

The progs will NEVER, NEVER take responsibility for murdering millions.

So it really does NOT matter what BS they come up with, all normal American Citizens will be “wrong” about this when the actual demon possesed Fauci had been caught 1,000% red handed.

The progs do not care who or how many they murder, they don’t care how many die with a cure right in front of them, so long as they “rule” over the ashes.

Just like their king...

This is asinine, claiming that the lab-leak claim is “an assault on science” when Fauci’s own notes show that he believed it (even as he publicly denied it). So will this same duplicitous media now claim that Fauci was attacking science?

I'm trying to remember a politician from the 80s or 90s who said he lied to his diary. (Tried googling, got nowhere.) Any day now someone is going put that forth as an excuse for Fauci.

“What I see is him privately conceding that the virus was likely a lab leak based on articles like this one. “

It’s possible that he thinks that. I’ve only seen a few pages of his diary that people have posted on Twitter.

Some of what I did read from his diary is ambiguous or incomplete. While he dissents from the wet market “origin” theory he thinks that the virus is natural. And that it “amplified” in the wet market.

So I guess what he believes is that the virus wasn’t the result of a mutation “originating” in the wet market. It would have already existed in some animal brought there. It’s not clear because he was writing for himself rather than publication and he didn’t elaborate.

Consider that there are only a handful (if even that) of research centers like the one in Wuhan that was genetically experimenting on bats, on the entire planet. And the COVID-19 virus just happens to show up right in its back yard. Surely this made the lab's activities the prohibitive leading contender for the source of the disease. If it was natural in origin it is about 99.99% likely it would have shown up somewhere not in the vicinity of such a lab.

This is not difficult reasoning, and I don't think Fauci and the others missed this logic. Rather, the extreme vehemence with which they denied it, and instructed the media to attack anyone bringing it up, is like flak telling me we are over the target.

There is a reason for Wuhan being a center of bat study. SARS-1 back in 2002-2003 is the first and only other known SARS virus outbreak.

That one started in Guangdong and clustered among food handlers and wild game traders. It had a death rate of 10%. The virus reservoir was found to be Horsehoe bats. This is the reason why bats and live game markets became the first suspects when SARS-2 showed up in 2019.

Both China and the US tried making whole virus vaccines for SARS but without much success. That attempt was dropped when SARS-1 died out but both continued researching bat viruses.

The possibility of a virus escaping a lab certainly exists. There was one in Reston Virginia and the Marburg incident in Europe. Lab accidents happen. Those weren’t hushed up and Marburg especially could have killed a lot of people.
