I never in a million years thought I would own an EV. In fact, I used to ridicule them. I thought they were just a “solution” in search of a problem, and that “problem” was usually “saving the Earth.” I still think the “saving the Earth” stuff is sheer nonsense, but now that I own a Tesla, I can see all of the other benefits (the real benefits) that these cars deliver.
The rapid advancement of Tesla’s Full Self Driving (FSD) was the hook that finally won me over, and I purchased a 2026 Model Y about four months ago. “Why self driving, when you can drive yourself?” There are a number of answers to that, but number one is the dramatically improved safety. Tesla claims their data shows FSD to now be seven times less accident-prone than a human driver. The insurance companies and some European countries that have done their own analyses estimate it to be two to three times safer. Either way, it is substantially safer than a human driver right now, and is only getting better as the software and hardware continue to advance further.
Several insurance companies now offer 50% off premiums if you let FSD do all of the driving. They’re not in the business of losing money, and they now have the actuarial data that proves that Tesla FSD is a safe bet. But safety isn’t the only benefit of this technology. Another important one is that FSD can allow elderly people to retain their independence when they reach the point that they no longer trust their own driving. Rather than the leftist “solution” of using mass transit (if you live through it) and giving up cars, FSD ensures that we all can continue to enjoy the freedom that having a personal vehicle provides, well into our old age or if we have a disability that would otherwise make it impossible to drive.
A Tesla is also the perfect retirement car, a big consideration for me since I am retired. Its operating and maintenance costs are far below those of gas powered vehicles, and you charge your car overnight every night, essentially giving you a “full tank” every morning. Using home charging, cost for your “fuel” can run around 2 cents or less per mile. There are also far fewer moving parts than in a conventional car, with almost no scheduled maintenance as a result. The one caveat is that if the car is damaged in an accident, it can be much more expensive to repair (but you have FSD doing a superhuman job of trying to prevent that, so that offsets the possible expense to some degree).
My wife and I were talking about this very thing the other day, I was the Executor of the Estate of my late Aunt, she lived in assisted living for 8 years, the last 2 years in palliative care, her monthly cost was close to $11,000/month.
Since I lived 2 hours away from her assisted living facility, I had to pay extra to make sure her needs were met.
In the not-too-distant future, it would be possible to have her remain in her home that I sold after she moved into assisted living.
With FSD, she could have remained independent, with home delivery of groceries, there is no real need to visit a grocery store or pharmacy.
The other big thing is if the home robots live up to their billing, Optimus units are supposedly going to sell for $25,000 to $30,000, which is surely to drop as the technology improves.
If you could get the robot trained to do all the daily household choirs, plus have an FSD automobile combined with home delivery of everything, the need for assisted living facilities if going to be dramatically reduced for many people.
