We now have woods and, as soon as we take possession of the property, I plan to enjoy them to the max. My heart thrills when I hear the wind in the leaves of tall trees!

There is also a bear who meanders through every couple of weeks. Any tips for handling that?

Apologies for double post. I did a double tap thinking about the bear.

“My heart thrills when I hear the wind in the leaves of tall trees!”

Even a better thrill is the sound of gunshots from neighboring farms and woods.

Enjoy the bear sightings!

I have a black bear who meanders through every couple of weeks in the spring and early to mid-summer. He hasn’t been here for about three weeks or so. My theory is that he found food elsewhere. I don’t leave any bird feeders out at night, and there is never any trash.

Make sure that the porta-potty has enough TP.

(I'll be danged, he DOES poop in the woods!)

If your new place has been lived in before it could be that the bear(s) are used to people and just consider them a nuisance and so don’t bother. However don’t bet your life on that. When you’re working/playing outside have a firearm handy. Normally I’d just say have a 44 Magnum or better. But if you have neighbors within eyesight then a compact shotgun is a better choice. If you have to take a shot the birdshot might not carry off your property especially if the bear doesn’t catch all of it. Shooting more or less downward, if you have the choice, is desireable.

And know your local rules as to whether there is a season, whether bears might be somehow protected, whether they might be tagged, etc. Trapping and far removal might be an option.
