👌 It was assumed that having chicken pox as a child provided lifetime immunity. Unhappily, shingles is the same virus - herpes zoster - that suddenly reappears decades later. I argued for years with the medical profession that a new vaccine was needed; they always argued back that since the patient had chicken pox as a child - they were immune to that virus.
Of course they had to know that that was impossible, medically; but they argued that anyway, supported by the AMA. Finally in the 90's a Japanese researcher created a vaccine to defeat herpes zoster - and the rest is history.
I was right. The chicken pox virus retreated into the myelin sheath of the nerve fibers and went dormant. Years later, by some mechanism, the (mutated?) virus is rejuvenated and manifests of course in the nerve fiber, causing much pain and dermal disruption.
