The US built its first bomb in about four years from scratch.

The CCCP built its first bomb in about four years, with some stolen plans. The difficult and costly part is U-235 separation.

The US had a population of about 140 million at the time. Iran has about 90 million people now.

Iran probably only first had enough uranium for a bomb about 20 years ago.

Being able to build one bomb isn’t enough. Iran would have to have another to avoid retaliation.

The Iranians wish to avoid immediate Israeli nuclear annihilation. They put the U-235 in tunnels and blew up the tunnel entrances to make it clear to Israelis that Iran doesn’t need to be annihilated by midnight.
