but I’ve never understood the idea of a cracker barrel or barrel of crackers ?
From the "country store" days before cardboard boxes, various dry foods would travel by stagecoach or train packed in barrels. The proprietor of a general store would set it on the floor of his store and take the top off the barrel for the customers. Goods transported that way included flour, oats, rice, beans, pickles, liquor, root beer, and seeds. There would be a scoop for things like flour and grains. Bags were made of cloth. Customers could also bring their own pails or other containers.
When earlier Americans traveled in Conestoga wagons to settle the West, the women would often pack breakables like china plates in layers of flour in the flour barrel to make the often-rocky trip.
