Elon Musk on AI: humans will no longer be in control in ten years | The Economist
YouTube ^ | 07/23/2026 | The Economist

Posted on 07/23/2026 5:39:19 PM PDT by SmokingJoe

In this interview with Zanny Minton Beddoes of The Economist, Elon Musk discusses the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and its implications for the future. Here are the key takeaways:

Timeline for AI Superintelligence: Musk predicts that AI will exceed the sum of human intelligence in roughly five years (0:00 - 0:19).

The Future of Human Control: He expresses doubt that humans will remain in control in ten years, comparing the potential intelligence gap between AI and humans to the gap between humans and chimpanzees (1:07 - 1:38).

Age of Abundance: Despite the risks, Musk maintains an optimistic view, describing the potential for an "age of amazing abundance" where people can access almost anything they desire (0:22 - 1:06).

Risk Management: While acknowledging a non-zero risk of catastrophic outcomes (which he previously estimated at 10-20%), he argues that the momentum of AI is inexorable and that we should focus on minimizing these risks while enjoying the progress (1:53 - 4:38).

Regulatory Proposal: Musk proposes a system where competing AI labs conduct peer reviews of each other’s frontier models for a week or two before release. He believes this competitive pressure would incentivize companies to keep each other honest regarding safety and security, serving as a signal for when government intervention is truly necessary (5:34 - 8:51).

Industry Cooperation: Musk addresses his personal history with OpenAI and Sam Altman, noting that despite personal grievances and competition, he believes AI leaders should establish regular communication to address shared safety concerns for the good of the world (8:52 - 10:36).

Notably Mr. Musk doesn’t say how we will acquire such homes, being jobless an’ all, nor mention how some people will end up on the beach while others have to live in South Succotash Louisiana.

Funny how those details are missing from the utopian future he posits.

Indeed. Robots may rule, but King Jesus will reign.

Can’t we just unplug the data center?

Jesus will reign

In Heaven. Jesus stated, "My Kingdom is not of this world". What do you suppose that means?

Are we talking about the same Elon who worked and slept on factory floors in the early days of Tesla?

The data centers are filled with image processors.

The amount of images processed has causes a camera SD card shortage.

There are biological ways to destroy all circuitry. The problem is that it would not be selective.

They are already planning to put the AI datacenters in space.

Which will make them untouchable to all but the very most powerful nation states. Over time AI might even make itself untouchable from them.

“I do think that a big percentage of humans will have nothing to contribute to the national economy.”

Well, even today there over 100 million adults in the US that don’t work... but seem to live pretty good.

I think that number is going to grow pretty fast. The societal upheaval will be unmatched, the economy as we know will no longer exist. Morality (the rules for living) as we know them today will, for the most part, be upended.

AI can’t tell fact from fiction. Hard to believe that it will gain the top of the food chain.

I’m already sick and disgusted with the automatically generated texts and emails from businesses and medical facilities (which are actually businesses, too).

The overly concerned tone and fake way too familiar chatter.

So fake, I’m sure humans will find a way to fight back. I just don’t know what it is yet.

The Brave New World of fake concern and force familiarity with lack of accuracy is going to send our country down the toilet.
