It was a terrible match. The players didn't care and didn't want to be there. The fans didn't care either. There were more empty seats than people.

The third place match at the World Cup doesn't work. Scrap it and the semi-final loser with the best tournament record (or goal differential) is third place.

The game would be more interesting if it really had something to play for other than a participation trophy.

How about this? The winner of the third-place game gets a 3 or 6 point conference bonus that goes towards qualification for the next World Cup?

Or even more bold, the top 3 teams in this World Cup just plain old automatically qualify for the next World Cup?
