K9 Police Service Dog (K9 PSD) Vethos of the Junction City Police Department (JCPD), who passed away while on duty on Monday, July 6, 2026, was found unresponsive in a K9-equipped patrol vehicle.

Preliminary findings indicate the cause of death was heat exposure.

The JCPD requested on Tuesday, July 7 that the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) conduct an independent third-party investigation to determine all facts surrounding this incident.

The JCPD has said they will cooperate fully with the investigation.

K9 PSD Vethos’ handler has been put on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation per JCPD standard operating procedure.

Vethos, a Belgian Malinois, joined the department in 2024 and served in the Investigations Division.

Is the dog’s life more important than a human?

Let’s not be hasty- as long as the officer got home safe that night, that’s all that matters. It’s a hard enough to get through the day without remembering some mutt in a car.

Remember when that poor officer was attacked by the blind and deaf elderly tiny dog? Luckily he was able to shoot it to save his own life.

The police dog-also an officer-did not make it home. And if you or I had killed it, we would be in jail.

When it is an enhanced penalty for the commoners to let die, yes. But the magic blue suit absolves them of any blame.

You argue exactly like a liberal - you can’t address the point being made. Good luck in your future endeavors.

No. And that's why police use them ... they unleash the dog when sending a human into the situation would be unacceptably hazardous to a human public servant. Then they turn around and pretend that the dog is an "officer" and that its life is equal to that of a human. The hypocrisy is typical of government.
