A LONG, LONG time ago my husband and I lived and worked in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The money was FABULOUS and we wanted to buy a house that I liked, not just one we could afford.
By April 3rd over there (about 100 yards from the Persian Gulf) the temperature was 103 degrees with 70% humidity. By July it was 117 degrees with 95% humidity. it cooled down around November.
I wondered HOW on earth those Arabs lived like that. Well, they slept all day in their tents and went out at night to do their shopping and business.
However, by the time we got there the Saudis went from being one of God's POOREST people to one of the wealthiest. Their religion dictates generosity so the prince or king, whatever, GAVE money to ALL nations who were poor BUT who were also "people of THE BOOK"...which would be the Bible, the Koran and the Tanakh.
The HINDUS, that is, India, got nothing because they weren't "people of the book."
Now, the Saudis are some of God's wealthiest people.
We stayed there five years, made a $BUNDLE$.
We had enough to buy a house after two years but the travel and $$ were just too good to ignore. We paid off the house after only NINE years. THAT was, I think, an extra bonus.
Also the IRS gave a break to ALL of us who lived in that HOT HOUSE: We paid NO FEDERAL INCOME TAX ON THE FIRST $70,000.00 WE EARNED. That was our combined income. My husband was a mechanical engineer and the country NEEDED them to run the business. And since we weren't living in the states at the time we didn't have to pay any STATE income tax. Life was good.
There HAD to be many incentive$ to get Americans to work over there. There were.
It was certainly worth it ($$) to go there but...the price was too high. Many, many American expats lived over there for YEARS and YEARS and YEARS but five was enough for us.
We got to travel like nobody's business BUT this fabulous, wonderful world called the USA was my home and back we came. When we landed at LAX I got down on my hands and knees and KISSED the linoleum at LAX!!
The Saudis had air conditioning up the wazoo. I wore a skirt or slacks to work but had to have a huge Irish wool sweater to sit in the office. It was ALWAYS 60 degrees only and I got chilly.
Yes, the humidity is hard to take.
I always saw ads in different trade journals trying to get geologists to come work in Saudi Arabia. I never thought about doing it.
