When, aprox. were you in Turkey? Was it many decades ago?

I’m wondering if this would still be possible under a leader like Erdogan. He seems eager to invite conflict in a cultural sense. While in the Navy, I spent a very short amount of time in Izmir, Turkey. I found the bazaars and markets fascinating and I had no problem with the citizens either. This was around 1981.
I was there a year or two before Erdogan took over.
remember thinking “tjrere goes that pleasant country” when that Islamist took over.
