111 Million U.S. Adults Do Not Have a Job and America Spends More Than a Trillion Dollars per Year on a Social Safety Net for Them
Liberty Daily ^ | Jul. 5, 2026 | Michael Snyder

Did you know that the number of Americans that are out of work right now is far higher than it was at any point during the Great Recession? I know that sounds crazy, but I will prove it to you in this article. A whopping 111 million Americans do not have a job, and we are spending more than a trillion dollars a year on the social safety net that supports them. Of course we cannot afford to do this, because the national debt has already reached 39 trillion dollars and it is growing at an astounding rate. If we do not fix our economy, disaster is inevitable..........

About 206 million are 18 to 64 and 61 million 65 and older. I’m working on getting that 111 million not working to 111,000,001 in the next few months.

I am retired, I guess technically because I collect Social Security at 74

However I am self-employed and continue to earn a full-time income with the business that I have had for a number of years. In my case as long as I’m physically able and have customers I’m going to continue doing so. So I wonder if I’m considered unemployed because I’m retired, or I’m considered employed

I wonder if there’s a significant number of these people that are part of the underground economy to avoid crippling taxes and regulations? I remember reading many years ago that in Italy one third of the entire economy was underground because of the government

THEY HAVE ADDED SOCIAL SECURITY RECIPIENTS & HOUSEWIVES WHO DO NOT WORK BECAUSE HUSBAND MAKES ENOUGH FOR THE 2 OF THEM.

THIS IS FRAUD ACCOUNTING.

IF I HAVE UNSPENT $$$ IN THE BANK, IT DOESN’T MAKE ME WEALTHY
IT ONLY MEANS I MIGHT BE HOLDING FUNDS FOR MY UPCOMING PROPERTY TAX BILL.

OTOH: MANY HR PEOPLE SAY THAT IF AN APPLICANT WAS RAISED ON A FARM OR RANCH -—THEN GO TO THE HEAD OF THE LINE.

THEY ALREADY KNOW NOW TO BE RESPONSIBLE.

“Retired people...”

Quick search;
Per pensiondaily(dot)com, 16.8% of the nation is retired. This doesn’t account for the % who have financially prepared for retirement, so let’s cut that % down 1/2.. roughly 8%

That is 28 million.
Add the 111 million in this article and we’re at 139 million

Retirement for SS is now 67 for those born after 1963 or 4 I believe. So, if your 65 your retiring early! LOL.
Enjoy.

It looks like the data source is https://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t01.htm. It lists employed and unemployed (not working but actively looking) as in the labor force and a second number for those not in the labor force.

Being on Social Security doesn't matter for these numbers. Since you are working for money, you are employed. Similarly, someone collecting retirement from one job but working part time is also employed. And the ages counted are 16 and up for the primary data, so slacker high school sophomores also count as outside the labor force.

I think welfare, on a national scale, has been an epic disaster. Welfare should be done locally if possible. States should be the ‘largest’ welfare regulators, not Federal. Welfare costs and taxes are to great, people move away from the states.

You can do California, NY, Illinois, New Mexico, and Minnesota, but you have to do it all with state taxes.

My super senior mom never had an official job. She raised the kids, did lots of community service and still runs the household even today..

It you look at the Medicaid numbers, 20% of the population doesn't have a pot to piss in. I am not buying that narrative with all the extra goodies that seem to come with being poor.

Agreed. But convince 51% of voters of that.
Blame Nixon’s revenue sharing. The states cannot print or borrow unlimited money. The Fed’s can. That is Nixon revenue sharing in a nut shell.

We borrow money from our grandchildren. Out grandchildren will have to print a lot of money to payback what we borrowed.

I am not saying that isn’t true, but then it’s a local/State issue and not Federal.

There are 205 million adult citizens of the US. If that 111 million were true, then unemployment rate would be around 50%. Even including the 20+ milion illegal invaders still doesn’t explian that outrageous number. I call this clickbait BS.

Ok home makers, caring for others? No clue, but I know in Texas about something like 38% of moms stay home.

If you add all the categories this number will still be huge, but it will be about half of what the article says.
