He was absolutely right about Star Wars. It’s the most overrated film in my adult lifetime.

It's important to note that one of Lucas's MAJOR influences were the Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon serials of the '40s (hence the vintage wipes between scenes in Star Wars). He was aiming to recapture those heroic adventures, while adding a bit of high tech (for the '70s) and a touch of mysticism -- on a fairly low budget. He wasn't really trying to advance "serious" science-fiction as much as he was paying homage, and updating, the "space operas" of his youth.
