When my daughter was in high school the church brought in a nun who ran a mission in Haiti. She got pretty involved. She even went down there to work on a project they were building (the chaperone was a retired Navy Seal…she was safe.)
It did not take long to discover that half of the locals working with the nun were stealing everything that was not nailed down. All of the work these kids doing fundraising and physically working on this project went down the drain before their very eyes.
I could not have asked for a better “college level” course for her in what the rest of the undeveloped world was like in real life. It was amusing to see her interact later with college friends who would fly off for a semester abroad without any idea of what life is like outside the states. She would shake her head at how naive they were.
Haiti is just one of those places that has been a corrupt dump for so long, they just don’t know any better. We don’t need a lot more of that in the states.
I've seen it here. People who just take whatever they can, invade wherever they can. Opportunistic like rats and other pests. They walk their dogs on your lawn and let their kids play on it too. If you didn't lock your car they will grab whatever's in it, at 3 a.m. No real sense of property rights other than their own. "If it can be carried, it can be stolen."
But unlike rodent pests they are grudge-bearing, angry, and "entitled."
