As someone who has spent a long time in Africa, I agree with you. In large parts this is a traditional society with many conservative leanings. A local Sociologist who visited the States felt the African-American culture was too rough, but was fascinated by the native American culture.

People who are tolerant might have a better chance of fitting in.
