Right now Kharg Island is a sitting duck for anything we might want to throw at it. If we should occupy the island, it would become sitting duck for anything Iran might want to throw at it.

The Iranians blowing up Kharg Island in retaliation would be shooting themselves in their own feet. Bring it!
Which is why we can't put our ships in the Gulf (with the exception of heavily-defended destroyers on brief flag-waving tours); Iran has demonstrated that they can reach out and touch all of our military assets in there.
