GOP race for governor of South Carolina heads for a runoff, with candidates unclear

The Republican gubernatorial primary in South Carolina will go to a runoff, NBC News projects, but it’s still unclear which candidates will compete in the June 23 contest.

The top two finishers in South Carolina primaries advance to a runoff when no candidate gets majority support.

Platner’s victory was no surprise.

With 100% of the votes counted, the results of the Democrat primary for governor:
Shah 26.7%
Pingree 23.9%
Jackson 21.1%
Bellows 20.6%
King 8.2%

Of course Maine has rank choice voting so the outcome will not be know for a few days.

Ten days ago the polls showed Shah in first, Jackson in second, King in third, Pingree in fourth, and Bellows in fifth.
Pingree received a strong endorsement from governor Janet Mills about a week ago. It looks like Bellows, the secretary of state will NOT be governor. She tried to keep President Trump off the Republican primary ballot in 2024.
